Convicted Toronto Dominatrix Vows to Continue the Fight

Toronto, Ontario - Professional Dominatrix Terri-Jean Bedford recently lost her appeal to overturn a conviction for running a house of prostitution. Bedford -- who had hoped the court would rule on whether SM is legal -- said recently that she isn't ready to give up.

"It grieves me greatly that the court has failed to seriously address the important issues raised by the case," said Bedford. Referring to the decision's opinion that prostitution can "encompass acts that do not include genital touching but are intended to be sexually stimulating," Bedford observed, "The decision defines a stripper as a prostitute. S&M is one of hundreds of activities that it seems can be called sexually [stimulating] -- whatever that means. This decision will, in my opinion, result in many innocent people being persecuted for having good (or naughty) clean fun. People may now be deprived of paying for an endless list of activities which do not even involve occasional genital contact."

"I have waged this battle with the help of many people from diverse backgrounds. I waged this battle because I wanted to know what I did that was legal. I wanted to know what the rules are. Citizens who have no clear rules do not live in a free society."

Bedford says she is putting together a coalition to fight the Canadian Bawdy House laws under which she was prosecuted. Her lawyer, York University's Alan Young, is launching an Action of Lobby to have the vaguely-worded law eliminated, and plans to use Bedford's case as the basis of his campaign.

"I was right. We fought. If we continue to fight... right will triumph."
